These trips start from Summit Point (elev. 6500 feet) and climb Summit Ridge (unless too much snow requires a lower route). We hike 6 to 7 miles and up about 2000 feet to either Pine Lakes or Crater Lake or both on the 5-day trips. The lakes are clear and brimming with trout (usuall small brookies) and offer a refreshing, if rather brisk, swim. From Crater Lake we can climb Red Mountain (9500 feet) while keeping an eye out for mountain goats and sky pilot or to the East Eagle Creek overlook in search of elk and mountain bluebirds. From Pine Lakes we can venture over slabs of granite and snowfields to Cornucopia Peak or wander through alpine meadows spiked with elephant head and Indian paintbrush. On our last day, we hike back to Summit Point.
