Guided Trips

Since 1985, Wallowa Llamas has conducted guided tours of small groups into the state's largest wilderness area, the Eagle Cap. Here, at the southern edge of eastern Oregon's spectacular Wallowa Mountains, amid towering peaks, glacier-sculpted valleys and sparkling mountain streams, our llamas carry the amenities, unburdening hikers to experience ease and luxury normally unavailable to back country travelers in such rugged environs.

We are offering the following trips for the 2012 season:

SPRING CREEK OF HELLS CANYON

April 22-25 | 4 days | moderate  | $695

Hike along the Snake River for two miles and then up the Spring Creek trail through spring wildflowers to our camp under the pines. Two layover days allow us time to explore the bench trail as it traverses expansive meadows of arrowleaf balsamroot.

July  8-11         | 4 days | easy | $695

This trip starts at Boulder Park (elev. 5000 feet) on Main Eagle Creek. A hike of four miles and up 1300 feet brings us to our base camp at Eagle Meadow surrounded by granite peaks and bisected by sparkling Eagle Creek. We have two days for hiking to nearby Eagle, Culver and Bear lakes while scouting for the colorful western tanager. The day hikes usually involve crossing snow. We hike back to Boulder Park on the fourth day.

THE HIGH AND RUGGED WALLOWAS

July 18-20 | 3 days | moderate | $695
July 25-29 | 5 days | moderate | $995
August 3-7 | 5 days | moderate | $995

These trips start from Summit Point (elev. 6500 feet) and climb Summit Ridge (unless too much snow requires a lower route). We hike 7 miles and up about 2000 feet to either Pine Lakes or Crater Lake or both on the 5-day trips. The lakes are clear and brimming with trout (usually small brookies) and offer a refreshing, if rather brisk, swim. From Crater Lake we can climb Red Mountain (9500 feet) while keeping an eye out for mountain goats and sky pilot or to the East Eagle Creek overlook in search of elk and mountain bluebirds. From Pine Lakes we can venture over slabs of granite and snowfields to Granite Mountain or wander through alpine meadows spiked with elephant head and Indian paintbrush. On our last day, we hike back to Summit Point.

Our hike begins at Summit Point (elev. 6500 feet), and we hike 7 miles to our camp near Crater Lake, where we spend two nights. The layover day is free for relaxing at the lake or hiking to nearby meadows. On our next hiking day, we walk down Cliff Creek and then hike up the Imnaha River to its headwaters and our camp for two nights below Hawkins Pass. On the following layover day, we can explore the limestone formations in this great glacial cirque while looking for mountain goats or climbing Cusick Mountain. On the fifth day, we hike over Hawkins Pass and down to our camp on the Wallowa River where we spend the final night. On the last day, we hike out to Wallowa Lake. Total miles hiked not including optional day hikes = 29.
